Movement Matters.

From the moment we are born, movement is an essential part of being human. As new born babies our movement reflexes progress to functional, conscious movements allowing us to later jump, grasp, play and dance as children. The instant we become mobile by crawling or walking, the world of exploration opens. As children we bend (without keeping our backs ‘straight’), roll, hop, skip, jump, squat, stand on one leg, dance, walk on our knees, hands and toes. Our joints move and our muscles stretch and contract through full ranges.

As we get older, the skipping and the hopping and the bending become more calculated and less frequent. Western culture has conformed us to cars, desks and couches for more hours than most of us sleep. Even though sitting in a car itself does not lead to dysfunction, the amount of time we spend in these stationary positions can lead to habitual altered movement patterns and often postural syndromes which affect our joints, muscles, nerves and even blood circulation.

The way and amount that we move affects the human body in profound ways. Essentially, things that do not move well, do not function well. The human body was made to move. Whether it be turning a hand to open a door, lifting above our head to fetch something off the top shelf, bending down to put on socks or kicking to propel a ball forward, movement is essential to well being: physical, mental and social.

Movement leads to function, function leads to participation and participation leads to social inclusion.

Movement Matters.

Services

Myofascial/soft tissue and joint mobilisation

These include specific hands on techniques aimed at affecting joints, muscle, nerves and circulation which in turn result in better movement and reduced pain.

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy encompasses several modalities used to improve circulation, decrease swelling and pain and facilitate muscle or nerve activity.

Strapping and taping

Strapping can be used to have an effect on joint, muscle or nerves. There are several types of taping, including dynamic, kinetic and rigid taping which all have specific uses. These uses include the immobilisation or facilitation of a joint, offloading a muscle to improve pain, assisting in swelling management etc.

Specific exercise and rehabilitation

Exercise and rehabilitation should be joint, activity and patient specific. These exercises should be graded and functional. We assist in strengthening, movement control, postural rehab, functional and gait training.

Dry needling

Dry needling is a cost effective technique used for the treatment of myofascial (muscle and connective tissue) pain and dysfunction. The approach is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles. This technique should not be confused with acupuncture, the Traditional Chinese Medicine technique.

Respiratory and sinus therapy

We use nebulisation, manual chest physiotherapy and deep breathing techniques or cardiovascular exercise to assist in the loosening, drainage and mobilisation of sputum when patients have acute chest infections (pneumonia etc) or chronic lung conditions (asthma and COPD).
